Summer Safety

We all spend a lot more time outside in summer - so it’s important to stay safe by keeping well clear of overhead power lines and electricity substations.

A child plays with a football, the text reads: never play near electricity substations, or be tempted to rescue an object trapped inside, all substations contain high voltage equipment which can kill, stay clear, stay safe and call 105.

Popular games and activities, like football, tennis or flying a kite, can all become dangerous if you make contact with electrical equipment.

Top tips for summer safety:

  • Keep kites, model planes and other toys away from power lines. If a kite or other object is about to make contact with a power line, drop the string or control immediately – electricity can jump!
  • Never enter a substation to retrieve a lost object, like a football, or even a pet. Call our emergency number on 105 and wait for help.
  • Do not climb trees close to overhead power lines. Branches may make contact with high voltage cables and cause serious injury or even death.
  • Carry long objects – like goalposts – horizontally and parallel with the ground to avoid making contact with overhead lines. These objects may conduct electricity.
  •  Never attach or tie anything to electricity poles, pylons or electrical equipment – electricity can kill.

To help us locate you quickly in an emergency, it’s a good idea to use the What3Words app. This is particularly useful if you are in a remote or unfamiliar location or don’t know the street name where the incident occurred.
