Bristol Reconductoring Scheme
What is the project?
As the local electricity distribution network operator (DNO) for Bristol, we have a responsibility to keep the network safe and reliable.
That’s why we’re investing £25 million to upgrade overhead electricity lines across Bristol, helping to maintain a safe, reliable electricity supply for homes and businesses across the city.
The work will involve upgrading existing overhead lines along a key route around east Bristol. Once complete, the new infrastructure will support around 146,000 homes and businesses and help keep the network resilient for decades to come.
Where is this taking place?
Our work will take place along a 14-mile route from Iron Acton in South Gloucestershire to Feeder Road in St Philip’s Marsh.
Some activity will take place in residential areas, including Lyde Green, Willsbridge, St Anne’s and Brislington. Local streets affected include:
- Cherry Gardens
- Caldicot Close
- Ludlow Close
- School Road/ Allison Road
- Goosefoot Road
- Pinkers Mead
Part of the route also passes through Nightingale Valley in Brislington.
Why is this work needed?
Much of the existing overhead line equipment is approaching the end of its working life and needs to be replaced to ensure the network remains safe and reliable for years to come.
At the same time, demand for electricity is increasing as more homes and businesses adopt low carbon technologies such as:
- Electric vehicle chargers
- Solar panels
- Heat pumps
- Battery storage
By upgrading the network now, we can increase capacity and future-proof the electricity system so it continues to support Bristol’s growth and transition to a low carbon future.
What are the benefits for local people?
This project will help:
- Maintain a safe and reliable electricity supply
- Support growing demand from homes and businesses
- Enable more low carbon technologies to connect to the network
- Support future development and economic growth in the area
When will the work happen?
We’re planning to start work in February 2027, with completion expected by November 2027.
We’ll carry out the work in phases where possible to help reduce disruption. [EB1.1]The current phasing for the works can be found below:
- February 2027: Enabling Works
- February – April 2027: Iron Acton to Westerleigh
- April – June 2027: Lyde Green to Willsbridge
- June-November 2027: Willsbridge to Feeder Rd
How will we minimise disruption?
We’re carefully planning our work to reduce the impact on customers and protect the environment. This includes:
- Phasing works where possible
- Carrying out ecological surveys before starting
- Working closely with local communities
- Restoring and improving habitats once work is complete
