Achieving net zero

We are leading an energy revolution, delivering a smart, digitalised electricity network to enable net zero for our stakeholder by as early as 2028.

Building a cleaner energy future

We're working towards the UK's net zero target by 2050 – and we're making real progress. Net zero means balancing the greenhouse gases we produce with the amount we remove from the atmosphere.

We'll get there by cutting carbon emissions, not just offsetting them. This is different from being 'carbon neutral', which relies on offsetting existing emissions rather than actually reducing them.

Why net zero matters

Globally, urgent action is needed to tackle climate change and avoid further global warming. We are driving the shift towards a low carbon, net zero future for our customers, to create a sustainable future for generations to come. At National Grid, we are working to become a net zero business and following a Science Based Target of 1.5° to limit the climate impact of our activities.

How we are helping others to achieve net zero

We are working closely with customers and stakeholders - from local authorities to community energy groups - to help them achieve their net zero ambitions.

This means making sure our network is ready to connect large numbers of low carbon technologies, including electric vehicles (EVs), heat pumps and renewable generation.

Our ground breaking innovation and digitalisation projects are also unlocking new ways of supporting a low carbon future, and helping to ensure that no customer is left behind in the transition to net zero, including those in vulnerable situations.

What we are doing to be net zero

As a company, we are tackling our own Business Carbon Footprint through a range of measures, including the growing number of EVs in our vehicle fleet and improved energy efficiency across our offices and depots.

We are also working to minimise the impact of our operational activities on the environment and to boost biodiversity at major sites.

As part of our target to reduce waste, we recycle more than ever before and are continually working with suppliers and others to identify new ‘re-use and recycle’ opportunities.

What you can do to support net zero

Get in touch with us to talk about your plans – net zero surgeries and community energy appointments are an opportunity to speak to an engineer or planner and to get advice and guidance on how to realise your net zero ambitions. We can also signpost you to possible sources of funding.

Together, we can build a clean, fair and affordable net zero future for everyone.
