Power Up

National Grid has partnered with charities and organisations across our distribution network, establishing Power Up Advice Hubs to help vulnerable households save money, keep warm and stay safe during power cuts.

National Grid power up programme

As part of our ongoing effort to fight fuel poverty and guarantee the comfort of our customers, National Grid has launched the Power Up programme to identify, contact and support customers who may be vulnerable during a power cut

By analysing demographic data, we reach out to households that may benefit from our services and invite them to register with one of our Power Up projects to reduce their energy bills and keep warm for less.

National Grid are proud to be the first energy company in the UK to offer such support packages as part of our Social Obligations programme. Since introducing this initiative in 2013, we have enabled thousands of eligible customers to save millions of pounds on their energy bills.

Power up projects

Once we have received our customers’ permission, we connect them with one of our external partners so that they can gain power advice and support from an organisation in their local community. Some of our Power Up partners include:

  • Coventry Citizens Advice – This local charity helps our customers in the West Midlands to access ECO Schemes and find the best deal for their energy supply.
  • Derbyshire Districts Citizen Advice – This charity offers advice to our customers in the East Midlands about switching energy providers and applying for grants to supplement their energy bills.
  • Energy Saving Trust – This independent organisation provides power advice to customers living in South Wales, offering information about favourable tariffs and directing them to local support services.
  • Centre for Sustainable Energy – This Bristol-based charity supports our customers in the South West, providing impartial advice on how to monitor their energy consumption and lower their spending.

In addition to these local Power Up projects, we have developed two targeted programmes to support customers with respiratory problems:

  • Air Liquide - This French multinational company is the second largest supplier of industrial and medical gases in the world. Through their partnership with the NHS, they supply oxygen canisters to patients across the UK and promote our Priority Services Register to people who rely on electricity to power essential home breathing equipment.

  • Nottingham Energy Partnership – This award-winning fuel poverty charity and Power Up Health Partner offers energy efficiency support and advice to elderly and disabled customers who use oxygen concentrators, asthma ventilators and other respiratory equipment at home.

Powering up customers across our network

Together with our partners, National Grid are honoured to be improving the lives of our customers every day. We are committed to monitoring every Power Up referral to ensure each customer receives support tailored to their needs, while protecting the data of anyone involved in the programme.
