Major new investment in Plymouth operations

Multi-million pound investment is underway in Plymouth as we expand our presence in the city.

We have opened a new £4 million vehicle maintenance facility at Wakehams Quarry in Plymstock to service vans, pick-ups, lorries and cars used by staff working across south and west Devon and south east Cornwall.

Engineers oversee the pylons, poles, overhead lines, substations and underground cables that provide electricity for 1.2 million customers in the South West, and the new facility will play a vital role in ensuring the reliability of our regional network.

Yvonne Harris, NGED Property Manager, said: “Our extensive investment underlines Plymouth’s strategic importance to our operations in the city and the wider area, and our commitment to customers and colleagues.

“The ongoing operation of the depot will help retain skilled workers and provide business for local suppliers.”

The new depot, which is sited within an established industrial and commercial area, will have a four-bay maintenance garage, complete with welfare facilities, offices, and storage spaces.

The building is energy efficient, with a thermal fabric, a rooftop solar panel array, and sustainable heating and ventilation systems.

“We are transforming our Wakehams Quarry site from a cable storage yard into a state-of-the-art vehicle depot in a way that is committed to sustainability and environmentally responsible development,” added Yvonne.

Previously, mechanics in Plymouth were based at our main site in Elliot Road. The move will free-up space at the premises, which accommodates 280 engineering and support staff.
