Pembroke 132kV Reinforcement Scheme

What is the project?

We're strengthening the electricity network between Pembroke and Milford Haven to help keep the power flowing safely and reliably to local homes, businesses and public services.

The project will involve installing new 132kV underground electricity cables between key substations in the area.

The project will see approximately 7km of new cable installed within an existing steel pipe, originally constructed in the 1950s. By reusing this existing route, we will significantly reduce the amount of excavation and construction activity required. It also includes some directional drilling works beneath Westfield Pill. This will be one of the largest drilling exercises ever carried out on our network, allowing us to install essential infrastructure underground while minimising disruption above ground.

Together, these works will strengthen the local electricity network and support growing demand across Pembrokeshire.

Why is the project happening?

Demand for electricity is increasing as more homes, businesses and public services switch to low-carbon technologies such as electric vehicles and heat pumps.

The existing 132kV network between Pembroke and Milford Haven needs additional capacity to support this growing demand and maintain a reliable and secure supply of electricity for local communities.

The Pembroke 132kV Reinforcement Scheme will provide a long-term solution for the local area by:

  • Improving resilience and reliability of local electricity supplies
  • Increasing network capacity to support future growth
  • Supporting the transition to a lower-carbon energy system
  • Helping the network meet future energy needs across the area

Project Map

Benefits for local people

This project will deliver long-term benefits for communities across Pembrokeshire, including:

  • A stronger and more resilient network: The reinforcement will improve resilience and reliability, helping to maintain electricity supplies for over 65,000 customers, including homes and businesses
  • Capacity for future demand: The upgraded network will help provide additional capacity at the 132kV level to support future housing, businesses, public services and economic growth across the area, as well as uptake of low carbon technologies like EVs and heat pumps
  • Reduced construction impact: By reusing an existing underground steel pipe for approximately 7km of the route, we can significantly reduce excavation works and minimise disruption to local communities and the surrounding environment.
  • Protecting the local landscape: The cables will be installed underground, helping to reduce visual impacts and minimise the effect on the local landscape.

Timeline

  • Current stage: Preparation works, including cable removal
  • Construction: January 2027-January 2029
  • Completion: January 2029

We will continue to engage with local communities and stakeholders as the project progresses.
