Central Devon Reinforcement Project
What is the project?
We’re upgrading the electricity network in central Devon to make sure it can support the area now and in the future.
The project will involve building a new 132kV overhead pole line from the existing Alverdiscott substation into another of our substations at North Tawton. The works will involve adding a second transformer at North Tawton substation. Together, these upgrades will strengthen how electricity is supplied across the region.
This is a major investment to ensure almost 49,000 homes, farms and businesses across central Devon have a safe, reliable electricity supply for decades to come.
Why is the project happening?
Central Devon is currently supplied by a single 132kV circuit into North Tawton. As demand grows, this single route limits how much electricity the network can deliver and makes it less resilient.
Electricity use is increasing as more homes are built, businesses expand, and low‑carbon technologies like electric vehicle charging and heat pumps become more common. We want the network to be ready ahead of that growth, rather than catching up with it later.
By adding this new capacity to the network, we can:
- Increase capacity by up to 272MW, meaning 41,000 homes can go fully electric in future by adding heat pumps and EV chargers to their homes
- Provide an alternative supply route if one circuit is out of service
-
Deliver a stronger, more resilient network for almost 49,000 customers
Without this investment, the network would struggle to keep pace with what central Devon needs in the years ahead.
Benefits for local people
This project will deliver long‑term benefits for communities across central Devon:
- A more reliable electricity supply: Adding a second circuit reduces the risk of disruption.
- Capacity for future growth: The upgraded network will support new homes, businesses and local services, helping the area grow with confidence.
- Support for low‑carbon technologies: The project makes it easier to use technologies such as:
- Electric vehicle charging
- Heat pumps
- Local renewable generation
-
Stronger infrastructure for the region: By investing now, we’re helping to future‑proof electricity supplies for decades to come.
Working with landowners
If the proposed route crosses your land, we’ll contact you early to explain what it means for you and answer your questions. Our aim is a project that works for Devon’s network and for you.
We’ll work with you to understand how you use your land and to find an approach that fits.
Building the project
Subject to required consents, construction is expected begin 2030.
The project will be developed with careful consideration for the local landscape, wildlife and habitats throughout the design, construction and operation.
We understand this can raise questions, and we’re committed to planning and delivering the project carefully and in consultation with landowners and the local community.
