Upper Ogmore Wind Farm Public Consultation

An informal consultation on proposals to connect a new wind farm to our electricity distribution network in Wales is open now until 16 July.

The new connection in the Upper Ogmore, Garw and Llynfi Valleys of Bridgend and Neath, Port Talbot, will connect the new Upper Ogmore wind farm to our network at a point close to the site of the consented Foel Trawsnant wind farm. To power the new wind farm, 9kms of new 66kV electricity cable will be installed, including 4.8kms of overhead powerlines and 4.2kms of underground cables.

Located in the Garw and Ogmore valleys, the site will use seven turbines to generate 25MW of renewable energy a year - enough to power around 16,500 homes.

The development was approved by the Welsh Government in 2022. The proposals are now being presented to the Planning Environment Decisions Wales (PEDW), local authorities and local communities for consultation.

The Proposals

The route will be made up of overhead lines to be situated on wooden poles and underground cables which will lie partially across the Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend Borders, starting and finishing in the area covered by Bridgend County Borough Council.

The underground section of the line will be completed in two sections, beginning under the road through Caerau and ending close to the existing substation. The second stretch will run eastwards from Mynydd Caerau towards a substation at the Upper Ogmore wind farm where the line ends. Highway works are expected to take approximately 4 months to complete. Our specialist planning teams will liaise with Bridgend County Borough Council to co-ordinate appropriate traffic management measures throughout the works.

The proposed route would start from the proposed Foel Trawsnant grid connection to the northwest of Natyffyllon and would proceed to the Upper Ogmore Wind Farm, as follows:

  1. The route begins to the west of the A4063 near Caerau as an Over Head Line (OHL) for approximately 1.1km
  2. As the route reaches Caerau, the route then transitions into Under Ground Cables (UGC) following the existing highway network for approximately 1.7km to the north
  3. Immediately before reaching Brynheulog Road, the route goes back to OHL for approximately 3.7km to the east.
  4. To the northwest of Blaengarw, close to Mynydd Caerau, the route transitions back into UGC and continues east for approximately 2.5km to the Upper Ogmore Wind Farm
